Friends of American Lake Veterans Golf Course Video
The American Lake Veterans Golf Course is a very unique course and one of the best keptWashington golf secrets. Everyone working at the golf course is a volunteer (from the maintenance crew to the front counter personnel). There are no paid employees.
Golf has long been part of the VA hospital system’s rehabilitation of our nation's wounded soldiers. However, in 1995 the U.S. government eliminated funding for operation and maintenance of the VA courses. One of these courses is American Lake Veterans Golf Course located on the VA hospital grounds in Lakewood, just south of Tacoma.
A strong volunteer group stepped in resulting in a golf course where all capital funds are donated and an all volunteer staff runs the pro shop and maintains the golf course. As stated earlier, there are no paid employees and numerous Bronze and Silver Star recipients are part of the volunteer staff.
The course received one of the very few America Hospital Association’s 2008 Hospital Awards for Volunteer Excellence.
The Friends of American Capital Lake Veterans Golf Course is the 501c(3) charitable organization that raises funds for improvements to the course. More than 95% of funds raised are spent on the course.
The PNGA, the USGA and the Seattle Golf Show are among the Washington golf organizations working to raise awareness and significant funds for "The Friends.”
"The Friends" have been instrumental in outfitting the course to accommodate veterans with all types of physical limitations thus providing a facility that helps the VA and Madigan hospitals get our wounded soldiers back on their feet.
Over the last four years, “The Friends” have raised more than $1,000,000 in cash and in-kind donations to make capital improvements to the course.
This does not count getting Nicklaus Design, Inc. to donate the design and construction supervision for the course’s planned second nine.
